Welshman Jimmy Wilde boxed at Pudsey Street at least 15 times, winning each fight, and was well known in Liverpool before he became known in London. One of his Liverpool fights saw him become the first ever world flyweight champion on 24th April 1916, with an 11th round knockout of American boxer Johnny Rosner. Wilde held the title for seven years, before losing to Pancho Villa in New York.
