Johnny Cooke with his sons
Johnny proudly wraps the Lonsdale Belt around his sons; John (7) left and Stephen (6). Cooke had recently won the British welterweight title when he defeated Brian McCaffrey at the King's Hall, Belle Vue, Manchester in February 1967. Johnny would successfully defend his title at the Liverpool Stadium three months later against Shaun Doyle but lost the title to Ralph Charles at the Royal Albert Hall the following year. He was never given the opportunity of regaining the title.
